Post Office GDS Salary: Pay, Perks & Allowances

Now let’s talk about the salary of Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) and the perks that come with it. It sounds very royal, but in reality, this allowance is a bit like “Naam Bada aur Darshan Chhote”. Let’s understand in detail:

Office Maintenance Allowance

Every month ₹100 is given for cleaning, decoration and repair of the office. Now think for yourself, what does ₹100 come with these days? Maybe a duster and broom. If the furniture or wall in the office falls, then only God is the master!

Fixed Stationery Allowance

  • Branch Postmaster/Sub Postmaster: ₹25 every month for buying stationery.
  • For Other posts: Only ₹10 is given.

What will you get for ₹10? A pen or maybe half a notebook. It seems that those who give stationery allowance think that GDS do not need to write! Boat Allowance

If your post office is across a river and you have to go by boat, then you get a Boat Allowance of ₹50 every month. That means ₹1.67 every day. Now which boat comes for ₹1.67, GDS themselves must be thinking about this.

Cash Conveyance Allowance (CCA)

A Cash Conveyance Allowance of ₹50 is given every month. This means that if you have to carry money or government funds, then this allowance will help. But ₹50 may not even be enough to pay for a bus ticket these days.

Cycle Maintenance Allowance (CMA)

If a GDS does his duty on his cycle, then he gets a Cycle Maintenance Allowance of ₹60 every month. Now ₹60 will not even cover the cost of filling air in the cycle’s tyre and oiling the chain.

Combined Duty Allowance (CDA)

For Branch Postmasters, if they do delivery or mail conveyance work, they get Combined Duty Allowance of ₹500 per job every month.

  • If the work is limited to BO (Branch Office) village only: ₹250 is given.
  • If mail has to be exchanged at bus stand or railway station: ₹250 extra is given.
  • That is, if BPM does all the work alone, he can get up to ₹500.
